there are so many items that are useless in 99% of situations. Compared to the +3 attack option, you'd need an attack score of 600 before that's worth it. Which, with the standard crit rate of 5%, is. And there's a stat scroll option that gives +10% crit damage.

Pretty much any artifact that mentions 'unaware enemies' is just. I do agree that the balance is /way/ off though. Against bosses, you generally need something extra, since blinks are a bit sparse. Even without any sort of combo effect, you can use blink to gain some distance as long as you can keep your combo running. In general, gun weapons are all about setting up an appropriate tempo.

There's also the item that gives a free attack if you hit with an elemental weakness in melee, which /also/ bypasses the ammo requirement. Also, if you have the robot familiar, you can use its first spell in order to close to melee, reload, and fire all in a single turn if you're on empty (and the second spell to get some breathing room to reload if needed). They hit multiple times at melee range, letting you break enemies extremely quickly. The shotgun is actually one of my favorite weapon types, at least with the right build.

I don't want to sound overly negative, I really like the "mood" of the game (sound & graphics) and it's a nice diversion overall, but in my opinion it could've been much more and it just isn't up to par with the classic roguelikes.Ĭurious to hear from other players familiar with roguelikes and their experiences with the game! While I understand that this is a single player game and that it's okay if things aren't 100% balanced, it still seems problematic to me that there's one REALLY good choice while the others are either meh (spear, sword, gauntlet) or just not worth picking (every gun due to you losing a round to reload). Anyone here remember a staff of Polymorph in ADOM being able to turn the tides?Īlso due to the movement and attacks being restricted to four directions instead of eight, the axe will always and forever be superior due to allowing you to attack the four corners without being hit back. You can't influence your run in any significant way because there's rarely something - be it a weapon or a relic - that's going to make your run more interesting. *) hope to get the few familiars that are actually good (Demon Lord and Trickster are really good, Talonclaw too due to the ability to Paralyze - imho of course)Īnd that's it. *) pick the relics that don't give you any debuffs (I don't have an issue with items not only being good, but at least make it worthwhile to use them by making the good abilities REALLY good) *) if there isn't an axe, hope to get one during the run later In Crown Trick a run usually goes like this: There's also a lot of things you can do to avoid dying, like switching stances to play more defensively in the beginning while you're still weak and sticking with ranged attacks, flee, throw potions, you name it. While choosing to start as an Assassin in ADOM is harder than - let's say - starting as a Paladin, the first will pay off in the long run to make up for the relatively bad start. Here's the issue with Crown Trick tho - all of the games mentioned here give you plenty of room to face the challenges you encounter, Crown Trick doesn't. Anybody else thinks that the balancing in this game is totally off? I love roguelikes, I most likely played every single one there is (from ADOM to ToMe to Angband to all the newer ones) and all of them have their surprise moments and will quickly kill you off if you don't adhere to their rules.
